Bill Jacobs grew up in a fertile music environment since his father was a musician. As a child, it was not uncommon for him to be around such jazz giants as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne. He went on to study with both Barry Harris and Billy Taylor.
