The York Scholar is part of an effort to share with the York College community some of the best writing from students in the Writing 301, 302 and 303 courses. Each year, the Writing Program publishes exemplary student papers in both print and online versions of this journal.
On the whole, the contributions to The York Scholar illustrate forms of literate practice we have come to know as academic writing. While we believe this practice remains an important part of an undergraduate education, we are mindful of the fact that it is but one kind of writing. Our hope is to stimulate a dialogue among faculty and students about the multiple literacies necessary for effective engagement in the world by providing the College with outstanding concrete examples of students engaged in the practices of academic literacy.
All students at York, including transfer students with associate’s degrees, complete one of the courses as part of their upper-division coursework: Writing 301, Research and Writing for the Major (Humanities and Social Sciences); Writing 302, Research and Writing for the Sciences (Natural Sciences and Mathematics); and Writing 303, Research and Writing for Professional Programs (all other majors and programs).
