Renovating Honors Research http://www.york.cuny.edu/academics/honors/renovating-honors-research The opportunity to do undergraduate research is increasingly serving as a recruiting tool for a number of institutions of higher learning. Given this important trend, it seems like a good time to take stock of our models of undergraduate research.  Unfortunately, most of them simply replicate graduate school practices.  The issue at hand here is how to renovate research at the undergraduate level so that we can revitalize the best forms of the traditional models and also open up new ways to think about what it means to do research.

Honors program former director, Dr William Ashton, and two honors program alumni, Vica Mars and Renny Eapen, published a paper in the peer-reviewed journal, Honors in Practice.  HIP is a journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council and publishes papers on the administration of honors programs. 

The paper,  "Ad tracking, brand equity research and … your Honors Program?" describes a marketing program for the honors program and a marketing research study of the program's effectiveness.  A third author of the paper was Dr  Barbara Ashton, who was the director of the honors program at Wittenberg University for 6 years.

A tradition in the Honors Program is the Fall Senior Honors Thesis Preview.  Seniors, who are working on their theses, will give a 20 minute preview presentation of their work.  This is a great opportunity to showcase our seniors' work and provides very powerful mentoring to the younger HP students. 
 
On November 12, at 12 until 2pm, please join us to hear our seniors describe their works in progress. 
 
This is a mandatory meeting for HP students.

    ]]>     No publisher William Ashton Honors Program 2009-06-27T19:10:00Z Announcement     York's Honors Program Joins Regional Organization http://www.york.cuny.edu/academics/honors/yorks-honors-program-joins-regional-organization In order to expand the opportunities of York's honors students, the Honors Program has joined the Northeast Regional Honors Council (NRHC), a regional honors organization for college honors programs in the Northeast U.S. The York College Honors Program has long been a member of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), the national college honors organization.  In the fall of 2008, director William Ashton and honors students Renny Eapen and Vica Mars, attended and presented at the national NCHC conference in San Antonio, TX. 

    Two York HP students have submitted applications to present their academic work at next year's NCHC conference in Washington, D.C. 

    In order to expand the opportunities of York's honors students, the Honors Program has joined the Northeast Regional Honors Council (NRHC), a regional honors organization for college honors programs in the Northeast U.S.

    While the NCHC holds their conferences in the fall of the year, the NRHC holds their conferences in the spring.  Also, NRHC conferences are in driving distance of NYC.  This will allow us to travel to NRHC conferences with more students, especially since the next several NCHC conferences (after D.C.) are on the west coast. 

    Dr Ashton plans on encouraging students to submit applications to present at the 2010 NRHC meet and hopes to take a large contingent of students to that meeting.
