Muchos creen que la mayor parte de la experiencia dominicana en la ciudad de Nueva York se encuentra en Washington Heights, pero aun quedan huellas de lo que solía ser antes las equinas del upper mid-town.
Many believe the bulk of the Dominican American experience in New York City lies in Washington Heights, but in the unexpected corners of now gentrified upper mid-town are remnants of what once was: Lucecita Ortensia Cruz is one of only a handful of Dominican immigrants that stubbornly remains in this neighborhood. A sudden death in the family forces her son, Julio César, to return to the City after a five year self-imposed absence. In the course of two nights they attempt to rekindle the love and appreciation for each other and their Dominican roots. But hidden secrets are unexpectedly revealed and threaten to destroy an already thin bond.

Please join us for a season that will inspire you, enlighten you and challenge you.

We have saved you a seat for another amazing year of theatre…

SlapDASH Directed by Timothy J. Amrhein

“SLAPDASH” is a fast-paced, funny, “audience-interactive” improv performance in the tradition of "Whose Line is It Anyway?" Two improv teams spontaneously compete to act out hilarious, unscripted scenes as they try to “out-perform” each other in the show where “everything's made up and the points don't matter.”
Oct. 21 - 27

MACBETH By William Shakespeare and Directed by Tom Marion

One of Shakespeare’s most brutal tragedies, “MACBETH” is a tale that speaks to us today as its story is continually played out on the streets of our own neighborhoods. Desire, betrayal, guilt, and revenge-“MACBETH” follows the actions of an ambitious young man, his lust for success, and his ultimate need to understand himself and what it truly is to be a man.
Dec. 2 - 10

PROSODY 400 Conceived and Directed by Tom Marion

Join us as some of York College’s most talented writers, musicians, and spoken word artists team up to create a special evening of poetry and music.“PROSODY 400” is a workshop devoted to the power of words, spoken expression, and all that can happen at the intersection of language and the dynamic force of music.
March 16 - 20

RENT Music and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson and Directed by Timothy J. Amrhein

In the first-ever collaborative effort between the Theatre and Music Disciplines of York College and the Performing Arts Center, York College Theatre presents Jonathan Larson’s “RENT”, based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La Bohème”. “RENT” tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City. Our first Main stage production.
May 4 - 13

General Admission: $7.00, With Valid College ID: $5.00

From its earliest years, the Theatre discipline at York has been committed to excellence, from the production of timeless plays by Shakespeare, Coward, and Williams to the new classics of August Wilson and A.R. Gurney. In the last few years, York College Theatre has expanded its repertoire to include timely new plays and fresh interpretations of the classics. Guest artists like playwrights Lynn Nottage, Linda Nieves-Powell and Nilo Cruz have made personal appearances and shared their artistry and perspectives in talk-backs with our performers and audiences.

This Season’s repertoire includes several highly innovative shows. For the first time, the Spanish-language hit “La Luz de Un Cigarrillo” (“The Light of a Cigarette”), will be presented in Spanish and English, at alternate performances. A special audience talk-back with playwright Marco Antonio Rodriguez will be a highlight of this production. In December, the classic French farce,” La Puce de l’Orielle” (“A Flea in Her Ear”) by Georges Feydeau, will transport us to the jazz-age Paris of the 1920’s. In early 2013, guest director Hadi Tabbal presents the world-premiere of “After,” an intimate portrayal of a Muslim family adjusting to life in modern America.

In 2008, we presented our first full-length musical, “Little Shop of Horrors.” Our acclaimed recent production of “Rent” was presented on the York Mainstage, a first for York College Theatre. The musical tradition continues this May with our highly-anticipated revival of the Broadway smash, “Dreamgirls”, another Mainstage presentation, co-produced by the York College Performing Arts Center. Our very reasonable prices make it easy to enter this year’s highly diverse and fascinating world of theatre. Mark your calendar now for the full range of drama, insight and fun. Join us for York College Theatre’s most adventurous season yet!

The Dept. of Performing and Fine Arts in Collaboration with the Dept. of Biology Opens its Photography Exhibition, "Pulling Back The Veil: The Art Of Microscopy"

Pulling Back The Veil: The Art Of Microscopy

This is a collaborative exhibition between Departments of Fine Art and Biology, consisting of images created by York College students in Cell Biology and Developmental Biology courses during the Spring and Fall Semesters of 2011 and 2012, under the tutelage of Assistant Professor Arne Christensen.

Professor Christensen, along with Adjunct Professor of Photography Sally Boon Matthews, also worked with several photography students from the Fine Arts Department over the summer of 2012 to create additional works.

In addition to being a scientific tool, microscopes can be used to produce images that are as beautiful as they are informative. Taking photographic images via the microscope was practiced almost as soon as the medium was introduced in 1839.

This collection consists of images produced via two types of microscopes, scanning electron and epifluorescence. The invisible is rendered visible through these processes, and the resultant, lovely images of human and animal cells, leaves, hair, and insects appear patterned and abstracted to the viewer's eye. Beautiful as they are, most of these photographs were created for science.

Can we call them art?

By creating and exhibiting these images, York College students are participating in a long-standing conversation between art and science about what constitutes the nature of a photographic image and how one defines art. The exhibit opens Oct. 21st and runs until Dec. 4. Please joing us for a reception on Nov. 13 at 6pm at the York College Gallery, Room 1B01.

What is the New York International Fringe Festival?

Representing 18 states and 12 countries, at 20 venues spread across Soho, Greenwich Village, and the Lower East Side, FringeNYC is the largest multi-arts festival in North America. Last year the festival attracted 75,000 visitors, and this year the presenters have every expectation that number will be topped.

For the performers—mostly emerging but some established—the festival offers wide exposure and the chance to take their careers to the next level. It has been a launching pad for such shows as Tony winner "Urinetown."

The competition is keen. There were 860 applications this year, and the selection process was daunting. "We look for innovation, vibrancy, and diversity," says Elena K. Holy, festival director. "By innovation, we mean trying something new; vibrancy is the passion we feel from the artists. People underestimate how important that is for us. And then of course we want diversity—all kinds of projects with a range of genres, styles, and themes, from many different places."

"Art is the signature of mankind" wrote G. K. Chesterton, and the faculty of the Department of Performing and Fine Arts believe that in their diversity these signatures give rise to the organic health of our many cultures.

In
that light we are united in our mission to guide our students in both
the making of their own art and in their conceptual, historical,
social, and professional understanding of our many arts, which vary
widely in our multi-disciplinary department. Included
are drawing, painting, sculpting, and computer-imaging; musical
composition and performance; theatre design and its crafts, along with
directing and acting for the stage; and the effective communication of
ideas, beliefs and of the self through the rhetorical arts, especially
for business, the professions and for public service.

Our standards of excellence match the scope of the Department. From
personal discipline and responsibility; to the intellectual, emotional,
and imaginative rigors of creativity; on to technical and formal execution of a high order: we expect our students to "maximize their humanity", as Aristotle said. Freed
from the bondages of artistic disengagement and cultural provincialism,
they are able thus to make their own telling signatures, to appreciate
their own and other cultures, to gain happy livelihoods, or - as we
would prefer and as many choose - to do all three.

Finally, and integral to our mission, is our leadership in the cultural life of the College. Whether
they be visual exhibitions, plays, concerts, readings, lectures,
workshops, or jam sessions, the events that students, faculty, and
guest-artists have mounted and continue to mount bring joyful
enrichment to York and its surrounding communities.

The Department of Performing and Fine Arts is educating the next generation of visual artists, musicians, communication and theatre professionals.

York College’s Gateway to Culture

I
would like to welcome you personally to one of the best and most creative
Departments at York
College! Whether it
is the success of a student who is playing in a professional Jazz Band or
designing scenery for a professional theatre company, one who is working as a
curator at a major museum, or a student who is pursuing a career in Speech
Pathology, York College students and graduates of the Department of Performing
and Fine Arts are our best advertisement.

On
October 24, 1966, the Board of Higher Education of The City University of New
York established "Alpha
College" as its
fifth senior college. Its name was changed to York College
by its first president, Dumont Kenny.
Established in 1967, the York College Department of Performing and
Fine Arts (YCDPFA) is educating the next generation of visual artists,
musicians, communication and theatre professionals.

In
the Music, Art and Art History, Communications Technology, Speech and the
Theatre Arts programs housed in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts,
students can study two-and three-dimensional visual arts, art history, acting,
theatrical design, piano performance, jazz pedagogy, television, and web
design. We have approximately 75 students in our undergraduate degree programs
and all of these students study with faculty members, who are well trained in
their disciplines and known in their profession. Our majors benefit from the
low teacher to student ratio of roughly 10 to 1; you'll spend more time
one-on-one with your professors than you would have ever imagined. Our faculty
can give you solid, practical advice about your career in the arts too, because
they know what it takes for success.

As
the College’s cultural gateway, the York College Department of Performing and
Fine Arts plays a major role in enlivening the social cityscape of Jamaica, Queens
by inviting the public to campus for a variety of experiences and by taking
outreach activities into the community. The Department’s location in a
major metropolitan area offers students easy access to museums, galleries,
professional performance venues and internship opportunities in various
industries within the Arts.

If
you are considering a career in the Arts, we can help you turn your passion
into a lifelong pursuit. You might want
to visit some classes, talk to some students and professors, and see for
yourself what York
College is like. We think
this is an excellent place to receive the best education possible in a
challenging and supportive environment. We look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,
