The Department of Performing and Fine Arts is educating the next generation of visual artists, musicians, communication and theatre professionals.

York College’s Gateway to Culture

I would like to welcome you personally to one of the best and most creative Departments at York College! Whether it is the success of a student who is playing in a professional Jazz Band or designing scenery for a professional theatre company, one who is working as a curator at a major museum, or a student who is pursuing a career in Speech Pathology, York College students and graduates of the Department of Performing and Fine Arts are our best advertisement.

On October 24, 1966, the Board of Higher Education of The City University of New York established "Alpha College" as its fifth senior college. Its name was changed to York College by its first president, Dumont Kenny.  Established in 1967, the York College Department of Performing and Fine Arts (YCDPFA) is educating the next generation of visual artists, musicians, communication and theatre professionals.

In the Music, Art and Art History, Communications Technology, Speech and the Theatre Arts programs housed in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts, students can study two-and three-dimensional visual arts, art history, acting, theatrical design, piano performance, jazz pedagogy, television, and web design. We have approximately 75 students in our undergraduate degree programs and all of these students study with faculty members, who are well trained in their disciplines and known in their profession. Our majors benefit from the low teacher to student ratio of roughly 10 to 1; you'll spend more time one-on-one with your professors than you would have ever imagined. Our faculty can give you solid, practical advice about your career in the arts too, because they know what it takes for success.

As the College’s cultural gateway, the York College Department of Performing and Fine Arts plays a major role in enlivening the social cityscape of Jamaica, Queens by inviting the public to campus for a variety of experiences and by taking outreach activities into the community.  The Department’s location in a major metropolitan area offers students easy access to museums, galleries, professional performance venues and internship opportunities in various industries within the Arts.

If you are considering a career in the Arts, we can help you turn your passion into a lifelong pursuit.  You might want to visit some classes, talk to some students and professors, and see for yourself what York College is like. We think this is an excellent place to receive the best education possible in a challenging and supportive environment. We look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,
