Relative to our understanding of the memory and language deficits associated with dementia, little is known about problems with everyday action performance (i.e., meal preparation, grooming).  Recent research suggested that omission (failure to perform a task step) and commission (inaccurate performance of a task step) errors may reflect dissociable aspects of action impairment that are predicted by different neuropsychological processes.  This research will be presented, along with evidence that contradicts the omission-commission model.  Finally, new findings on everyday action interventions informed by the omission-commission model will be discussed.

When you graduate, you will be eligible to take the National Board Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam, and become state licensed to practice as a registered occupational therapist.

This dual degree BS/MS professional program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).  The professional phase of the program starts in the fall of each year, with full-time day classes for three years, and one semester of full-time clinical rotations.  Our graduates are employed in several states and various settings: hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, community settings, and private practice.  They work in public, local, state, and federal institutions as staff therapists, managers, consultants and supervisors.  The job market is excellent, and our graduates often have a choice of jobs.

The Profession

Simply stated, occupational therapy enables people to do the “day-to-day activities that are important to them” despite impairments, activity limitations, or participation restrictions or despite risks for these problems (Neistadt & Crepeau, 1998, p.5). Occupations are another name for these day-to-day activities. Occupations are goal-directed activities that typically extend over time, have meaning, and involve multiple tasks.

Occupational therapy is the art and science of directing human participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance, to facilitate learning those skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity, to diminish or correct pathology, and to promote and maintain health.

The Nature of the Work

Occupational therapists use selected activities to help individuals become self-reliant, and build a balanced life style of work and leisure. In a partnership with clients, occupational therapists may work individually, or in conjunction with members of healthcare teams (which may include physicians, vocational counselors, nurses, social workers, speech pathologists, physical therapists, teachers, and others).

Occupational therapists work in hospitals, clinics, schools, rehabilitation centers, home care programs, private practice, community health centers, nursing homes, and day care centers. Occupational therapists are licensed by New York State through the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Occupational therapists are registered by NBCOT. This licensure and registration (OTR/L) allows occupational therapists to carry professional and administrative responsibilities for occupational therapy clinical programs and services. They are responsible for evaluating clients, deciding upon program goals, working with clients to implement goals, and evaluating progress. In addition, OTR’s educate practitioners entering the field and are involved in research.

Fatigue is among the most frequent symptoms observed among neurological and other medical populations.  It is also one of the most misunderstood and difficult to assess symptoms.  This talk will provide an overview of our current conceptualization of fatigue, beginning with its history and definition, its assessment and measurement, and the nature of fatigue in the general population, followed by a detailed discussion of fatigue in various clinical populations.  The discussion will continue with what is known about the treatment of fatigue and end with a new conceptual model of fatigue and how this model should drive future research and clinical approaches.

To apply, you need:

• Completion of 56-60 college credits (Transfer students must have all prerequisite courses completed.) A minimum grade of C is required to transfer credits from another institution
• Minimum overall GPA of 2.8.  Effective for Fall 2015 admissions, pending approval, the minimum overall GPA will be 2.9.
• Completion and documentation of at least 50 hours of volunteer work in an Occupational Therapy setting
• OT-specific prerequisites and York College general education requirements that must be completed prior to enrollment in program:

General education requirements waiver may be applicable if possessing a degree. This determination is made by the York College Registrar.

Application and Screening for Occupational Therapy Program

Selected applicants will be invited for an interview.  Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview.  Additionally, an interview does not guarantee admission to the program.  Applicants must keep in mind the highly competitive nature of this admissions process.

Incomplete application packets will not be accepted. Your complete application packet should include:

• Completed Department of Occupational Therapy Application
• Official transcripts from all schools attended besides York College
• In addition to submitting copies of the transcripts, transfer students not attending York College at the time of application must request a courtesy transcript evaluation from the York College Registrar's office. Without the evaluated transcript, no advisement or screening can be done by the OT program.  It is the student's responsibility to provide an unofficial copy of all transcripts to the OT program for submission to the Registrar's office for evaluation.
• *Two letters of reference using the supplied form; one from a supervisor or professor and one from an Occupational Therapist (this letter should also include verification of completion of at least 50 hours of volunteer work)
• A current resume
• Proof of acceptance to York College for transfer students

* Applicants may submit their application packets with ONE of the two letters of reference outstanding.  The second letter must be submitted by the end of the summer of they year they are applying for.

Students should provide accurate contact information, including home phone, cell phone, and email, so that eligible candidates can be contacted for an interview appointment.  The interview process can take 1-3 hours; students should allow for adequate time. Interviewing students are also required to complete an on-site writing sample on a computer.  Students with a documented disability requiring accommodations must notify the department at least one week prior to their interview date.

• There is no advanced standing in the program regardless of qualifications or experience of the applicant.  All candidates must complete the entire course of study.
• Please be aware that the Occupational Therapy program will only screen a candidate twice (for two separate years).  No subsequent applications will be considered.

Acceptance into the Occupational Therapy Program

Approval by the Occupational Therapy Evaluation and Selection Committee is required. This Committee bases its recommendations on the following criteria:

• Completed Department of Occupational Therapy application and two reference letters, one of which must be from an occupational therapist
• Professional interview
• Minimum GPA of 2.8 and appropriate courses
• On-Site Writing Sample completed on a computer

Candidates for the program must keep in mind the competitive nature of the admissions process.  Completion of required courses and initial eligibility to be screened does not guarantee admission into the program.  Applicants are not considered accepted into the program until they receive a letter of acceptance from the chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy.

Please be aware that a felony conviction may preclude an individual from taking the certifying examination and obtaining a license to practice.

Required Competencies for Online and Hybrid Courses

In additional to traditional face-to-face courses, Occupational Therapy Program required courses may include online or Hybrid courses. Our current Hybrid course offerings include OT 643 and OT 645B.  Both online and Hybrid courses require students to complete a free Blackboard workshop offered by the York College Department of Educational Technology at the beginning of the semester when these courses are offered. This instruction teaches students how to use the York College online management system Blackboard.  Students participating in these courses must have regular access to a computer with an Internet connection,  Word or Word –compatible software, and be able to use Word or Word-compatible software to complete and post required online assignments using Blackboard.
