The York College Department of Occupational Therapy and the Metropolitan New York District of the New York State Occupational Therapy Association present Dr. Dierdre Cooke, "Development of a Standardized Visual Perceptual Screening Tool for Occupational Therapists, and an International Perspective of Stroke Rehabilitation."

Biography:

Dierdre Cooke, PhD is the Rehabilitation Coordinator for the Mater Private Hospital Rehab Unit in Brisbane, Australia. She also lectures in Occupational Therapy at the University of Queensland. Her areas of clinical specialty and research interest include neurological rehabilitation following stroke (in particular, visual perception, upper limb restraining praxis) and Parkinsons' disease. Development of a new standardized screening tool for visual perception and praxis was the topic of her PhD thesis.

Dr. Cooke is in New York as part of a seven week international study tour on a Winston Churchill Memoril Fellowship exploring the implementation of evidence-based practice for recovery following stroke. The presentation will include a summary of the private rehabilitation service in Brisbane, Australia where she works, as well as an overview of the Winston Churchill Fellowship study tour, for which time in New York is one component.

Abstract:

Impairments of visual perception following stroke such as poor object recognition, spatial relations problems, apraxia and unilateral neglect impact on a persons' capacity to regain independence, participate in rehabilitation programs, and return to home, work and leisure pursuits. The Australian National Stroke Foundation best practice guidelines in stroke management recommend visual perceptual screening for all patients following stroke using a standardized and validated screening tool. Essential to the interpretation and use of the screening tool data is the availability of appropriate normative data to assist the therapist in in determining intact versus impaired performance for test completion. A tool was developed that is reliable, validated and has age-stratified normative data for 356 adults as the topic of Dr. Cooke's research.

Therapeutic Engagement in Rehabilitation: Measurement and Theory
Anthony Lequerica, Ph.D.

Who Should Attend:

Faculty, Clinicians, and Students

Abstract:

The rehabilitation hospital setting is often different from acute care facilities in terms of the demands placed on patients to become more active participants in their recovery. Patients healing from brain injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, orthopedic trauma, or surgical procedures are expected to expend some effort in their rehabilitation therapies which may include physical, occupational, speech, and/or other therapies often aimed at achieving a higher level of functional independence.

Because it is central to the medical rehabilitation model, patient involvement in therapy can have a profound impact on rehabilitation outcomes. This lecture will explore the concept of therapeutic engagement from a theoretical standpoint, discuss its measurement, and consider potential barriers and facilitators that could be accounted for in order to maximize benefits of treatment in the rehabilitation setting.

Biography:

Anthony Lequerica, Ph.D. received his B.S. in Psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (specialization in Neuropsychology) from Wayne State University. He completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship through the Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

He currently holds a dual position at The Kessler Foundation Research Center as a Neuropsychologist and Clinical Research Scientist where he continues to pursue his interests in rehabilitation research and clinical work involving neuropsychological assessment and psychotherapeutic intervention for individuals recovering from stroke and traumatic brain injury.

The purpose of the annual Occupational Therapy Colloquium is to enable scientists engaged in basic and clinical research to directly interact and speak with OT clinicians, clinical faculty and OT/ health profession students. Often these researchers are engaged in international and collaborative studies that have implications for how we see patient disorders, impact of disorder on function, and applications to intervention strategies.

Omissions versus Commissions: Are Different Everyday Errors Meaningful for Understanding and Treating Functional Deficits?

Relative to our understanding of the memory and language deficits associated with dementia, little is known about problems with everyday action performance (i.e., meal preparation, grooming). Recent research suggested that omission (failure to perform a task step) and commission (inaccurate performance of a task step) errors may reflect dissociable aspects of action impairment that are predicted by different neuropsychological processes. This research will be presented, along with evidence that contradicts the omission-commission model. Finally, new findings on everyday action interventions informed by the omission-commission model will be discussed.
