Shanika Morgan, Undergraduate Coordinator for the Office of Minority Affairs at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, will be at York to discuss the several Summer Internship and Research opportunities they are offering. These are great programs for underclassmen who are interested in learning more about careers in healthcare and/or biomedical research.

Come learn about the following opportunities!

The "Exploring Health Careers" Program is an initiative to expose students (mainly Freshman) to a variety of career options in the health professions. The program is designed to provide exposure to targeted health professions through faculty presentations, shadowing opportunities in clinics and affiliate sites, as well as information about the application process.

The "PATH Allied Health Track" program is a unique opportunity for students to explore the sciences and become acquainted with healthcare professions early in their academic career. The program is designed to prepare students, through a 1-summer curriculum, to apply early decision to the College of Health Related Professions at SUNY Downstate in one of the following fields: Physician Assistant (PA) or Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT).

The "PATH - Graduate Studies Track" Program offers students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research with Downstate faculty. Students are taught the basics of scientific writing and abstract development. At the end of the 8 weeks, each student will get to present his/her work at the annual Summer Research Symposium.

Welcome back to a new semester, I hope everyone's break was restful and/or exciting. I would like to remind you all of a few things, one as the time gets closer to graduation the work will get harder, stay focused and don't forget your goals. Second, we formed this club to bring together all Pre-med and dental students so we can successfully move forward in the process together and be aware of what needs to be done. Third, to ensure success we need involvement. This does not necessarily mean engrossed involvement but awareness of the clubs goals and shared interest in achieving them. If you know anyone who is Pre med pre dental or thinking about it, tell them about our club and get them to join. One last important note, we cannot help those who cannot help themselves, this semester I would like for us as a club to get a MCAT course running at York. We need enough club members to be eligible, I'm sure more of you are so please don't miss out on this opportunity. If we don't do this now we can't help those who would appreciate the opportunity later.

So please if you have not done so reply to kbamba95@gmail.com with your :

Name
MCAT prerequisites taken
MCAT prerequisites left to take
Level of college education (freshman, sophomore etc.)
Will you be finished by summer 2014

Finally our first Mandatory meeting on Tuesday January 29, 2013 at 12pm in room 4E07.
Using Drosophila melanogaster to Test Gene-environment Interactions Relevant to Parkinson's Disease

Using Drosophila melanogaster to test gene-environment interactions relevant to Parkinson's disease
ABSTRACT
A pathological hallmark of Parkinson’s disease is the loss of dopaminergic neurons. Indeed, dysregulation of dopamine has been proposed as a causal factor in the disease, although the underlying mechanisms are not known. Several genetic factors for PD have been identified including mutations in the human gene parkin. Exposure to environmental toxins also increases the risk of PD. Using Drosophila, we are investigating the regulation of dopamine transport and susceptibility of DA neurons to toxicity produced by pesticides. The Vesicular Monoamine Transporter (VMAT) is a twelve transmembrane domain protein that packages and transports dopamine and serotonin into synaptic vesicles for exocytosis. We have previously shown that over-expresssion of Drosophila VMAT (DVMAT) decreases the neurotoxic effects of a human parkin mutant. Here the goal is to understand the interaction between environmental toxins such as rotenone and paraquat, and the aminergic pathway in a genetically tractable organism. We report a differential effect of VMAT over-expression in the rescue of neurotoxicity induced by rotenone compared to paraquat. These data highlight a possible mechanistic difference between how pesticides such as paraquat and rotenone with cellular dopamine.

Biology

The Biology Program provides academic experiences in the life
sciences that meet a variety of student needs. The courses offered
cover a broad range of subjects from General Biology, Biostatistics and
Genetics, which all majors must take, to Organismic Biology, Molecular
and Cell Biology, and Ecology. The program of study fulfills the
academic requirements for admission to medical, dental and related
professional schools and also prepares students for graduate studies
(M.S. or Ph.D.) in all areas of Biology.

The program also provides non-science majors with an understanding
of biological concepts and the importance of biological discoveries to
the solution of social and environmental problems.

Biotechnology

The Biotechnology Program is an interdisciplinary major designed to
provide academic, laboratory and research experiences to students with
career interests in the biomedical sciences. The program serves as
preparation for the pursuit of graduate degrees in biotechnology,
molecular genetics, molecular biology, cellular biology, biochemistry
and other related fields. It provides a strong academic program for
students interested in further studies leading to careers in the
medical professions. Graduates with the bachelors degree may also seek
jobs on the technician level in areas such as pharmaceutical, hospital
and academic research laboratories.

The Biotechnology major incorporates general courses in Biology,
Chemistry and Physics, with upper level instruction in Biochemistry,
Genetics and Biotechnology. The course of study emphasizes the
structure, function and relationships of DNA, RNA and proteins in the
regulation of gene expression. Methods used in teaching and research
laboratories incorporate instruction and training on modern equipment
employed in Biotechnology for processes such as gene cloning, DNA
sequencing and RNA processing, with application to the improved
analysis, diagnosis and treatment of inherited and acquired human
diseases.
