Step 3: Major/Career choices and the Personal Fit

Once you have made some choices for a major/career, look into specific requirements and match them against your skills, abilities, expectations and practical concerns. Does your choice ‘fit’ you?
  • Look at the course work – for example, does the major require classes in areas that do not match your academic strengths, i.e. do you want to be a doctor but do not do well in the sciences?
  • How many semesters are needed to complete the degree?  Degree completion can be delayed if prior coursework does not apply to the major you are considering.
  • How much preparation time is required before you are qualified to work?  Some fields require graduate degrees, internships and/or certification.
