Professor Chanel will discuss her research into the tax and accounting issues that led to revolution and a new French tax system and how some of these same issues affect the current dialogue about changing our own tax code.

There is a common misperception that the French Resolution was triggered in part by high taxation of the peasants. However, all levels of French society detested the tax system.

Their anger was less about tax rates than it was about unfairness and lack of transparency, plus greed, corruption and incompetence throughout the country’s fiscal structure ... and taxation of some very strange items.

The Crisis and Craft of Literacy

This lecture examines a body of texts known as "literacy narratives," which are autobiographical stories that describe one’s process of acquiring literacy.

Literacy narratives by “minority” writers are frequently assigned in English Composition courses as a way to promote diverse and inclusive curricula, challenging students to reflect on their own acquisition of academic English.

This research explores the ways in which literacy narrative assignments are effective while also revealing how they can, in fact, uphold the tools of writing they mean to challenge or critique.

Roots in our Earliest Relationships & Implications for Education

Pride and shame are two very powerful emotions that can propel or totally immobilize children as they seek to learn, adapt, and constructively act upon their environments. Can our tendencies to express these emotions be linked to how we first learned to function in our earliest relationships? Might these tendencies and relationships also have a bearing on how we react to success and failure in achievement contexts, such as in the preschool classroom and perhaps even in the college classroom?

These are some of the questions addressed by Dr. Lafontant’s empirical study on self-evaluative emotions and attachment security in very young children.

The Domino Effect: How Development in New York City is Often Bittersweet.

The Domino Effect is a feature length documentary film that
explores the process of real estate development in New York City.
The redevelopment of the 129 year-old Domino Sugar Factory in
Williamsburg serves as the film’s case study for examining the
complex politics of urban development in the 21st century. Told
through the voices of longtime residents, the film conveys the
personal impact of gentrification while also shedding light on
issues encountered by residents of cities all across the country.
