Assistant Provost

Dr. Holger Henke is the assistant provost at York College, City University of New York. He joined the Office of Academic Affairs in September 2008.

holger photoDr. Henke received his M.A. in Political Science (with Communications Sciences and Modern German Literature minors) from the University of Munich.  He subsequently moved to Jamaica where he obtained a Ph.D. in Government from the University of the West Indies.  His dissertation Between Self-Determination and Dependency:  Jamaica’s Foreign Relations, 1972-89 explores a particularly salient period in relations between developing countries and the industrialized world, focusing on the case study of Jamaica.

Before joining York College, Dr. Henke was a full-time faculty member at Metropolitan College of New York.  He also has taught political science and sociology courses at the University of the West Indies, Iona College and Hunter College.  Henke is also an Advisory Board member of the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College where he has previously worked as assistant director.

Apart from international relations (Caribbean, Europe, USA, and Asia), Dr. Henke also studies migration, political culture and development (political economy).  He has published six books and numerous scholarly articles.  His most recent book is titled Constructing Vernacular Culture in the Trans-Caribbean (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2008).  Dr. Henke is also the editor of the peer-reviewed journal Wadabagei: A Journal of the Caribbean and its Diasporas. In 2010-11 he served as the president of the Caribbean Studies Association.  Since 2011, he is a reviewer for annual reports on several Caribbean countries for the Washington-based think tank Freedom House.  In 2013 he received a Fulbright (International Education Administrators - United Kingdom) award.  In June 2014, he participated in the Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education.

In his spare time, Dr. Henke enjoys reading, playing classical guitar, chess, and scuba diving.
