Academic Affairs

Welcome to Academic Affairs at York College of The City University of New York!

This site provides information about our mission, organization, programs, and operations. It aims to facilitate communication and enable faculty, students, alumni, and friends to better understand and contribute to our educational pursuits. York College is committed to the CUNY mission of teaching, research, and public service, and is guided by the institutional values of Access and Excellence in response to the special needs of our urban constituency. Thus, students who chose to study here are able to select majors from the liberal arts and sciences and from several professional fields. Further, they participate in a variety of activities outside of the classroom that extend their educational perimeters.

As Provost, I have the privilege and responsibility of being the College’s Chief Academic Officer. This entails serving as principal adviser to the President on academic matters and leading the College’s academic units and pursuits. As head of the Division of Academic Affairs I adopt a team approach to guiding the affairs of the Division, under the leadership of the President and in partnership with the other division heads. The Deans for our three schools – the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Information Systems, and the School of Health and Behavioral Sciences – play central roles in the Division, as do the Chairs of our 17 academic departments, the Chief Librarian, and the director of the Honors Program.

The CUNY Aviation Institute, the Teachers Academy, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning are among our signature academic ventures. Significant, too, are the academic support areas: Registrar’s Office, Academic Advising, Testing, Research and Sponsored Programs, Planning and Institutional Research, the Academic Achievement Center, the Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) program, and Academic Skills Immersion and Outreach. Moreover, playing notable teaching, research, and community engagement roles are the Performing Arts Center and the York College/Food and Drug Administration Collaborative Initiative.

York College is a relatively young institution, established in 1966. But over the years we have developed a deep commitment to broadening the educational and economic horizons of our students and to facilitating the theoretical and applied research endeavors of our faculty. Our talented faculty, and dedicated administrators and staff labor painstakingly to ensure that our students fulfill their educational dreams. What is more, we are committed to the fulfillment of those dreams by habituating best practices, mindful of Aristotle’s dictum: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”

So, thank you for visiting us. I trust that this virtual visit will enable you to understand who we are and how you may become a part of or a contributor to the work we do in the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and service.

Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, Ph.D.
Professor of Political Science
Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

On August 14, 2009, President Obama signed The Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) which reauthorizes, as amended, the Higher Education Act of 1965. HEOA is applicable to institutions like CUNY that receive Title IV financial aid funds and includes a number of requirements regarding textbooks that are intended to ensure that students have access to affordable course materials by, among other things, enhancing transparency and disclosure regarding textbooks and other course materials. These requirements became effective July 1, 2010.
